Additions and Corrections to
Pioneer Women Compilations

Following are additions and corrections to the data found on the Pioneer Women of Geauga County page. These additions and corrections come from personal research of others, and are to either add to or correct information which was found in the book "Pioneer Women of the Western Reserve." Where possible, email addresses of those who have done the additional research are included.

**JOHNSON, Jane (2nd wife of Isaac THOMPSON)
The writings list her as "Jane Johnson," wife of Capt. Isaac THOMPSON, then later mentions that she was apparently previously married to a WELLS. Ruth Ann Miller indicates in her Revolutionary War pension records for Capt. THOMPSON that her maiden name was EVANS and not JOHNSON. Ruth Ann has more information on this family, email her by clicking on her highlighted name above.

*YOUNG, Silas, his wife Hannah CARROLL, and their daughter, Betsy YOUNG

John, Rease, Tommy, Hercules, & Ransford. Go to the Geauga Co. Family Page to see this information.

From "A Monumental Work, Descriptions and Interments in Geauga County, Ohio through 1983" by Jeanette Grosvenor; Middlefield - Young-Gates Cemetery, Section 2:
Young, John died 27 Sep. 1859 age 67 years

**Moses A. DEWEY & Anna DICKENSON
Following is information to correct a listing of Munson Twp = "Moses A. Dewey
came in 1832 and Anna Dickenson." The correct name is Marcus Aurelius Dewey,
my Great-great-grandfather and g-g- grandmother, Anna Dickenson.  Also
information concerning them can be found in "History of Geagua and Lake
Counties, Ohio (published 1878), page 201.  This book is in the Chardon Library.:

Marcus Aurelius Dewey was born in Central Bridge, Schoharie County, New York
on December 19, 1805.  Marcus died December 28, 1895, in Munson, Geagua
County, Ohio at 90 years of age. He married Anna Dickenson in Central Bridge, Schoharie County, New York on January 9, 1831.  Anna was born on June 9, 1805.  Anna died on November 28, 1861, in Geagua County, Ohio at 56 years of age. They came to Geagua County in 1832.  Children born to them:

**Polly THOMPSON, wife of STEPHEN BOND
While it has been brought to my attention that the paragraph mentioning Polly's marriage to Stephen Bond in 1806 does not state that she is the daughter of Capt. Isaac THOMPSON, it is presumed that she is indeed his daughter. On page 7 of Volume I, two paragraphs before the mention of the marriage, it states that James THOMPSON (who is identified earlier as Capt. Isaac's son, "returned to Charleston for his sister Polly." Because it is doubtful that there was more than one Polly THOMPSON in Middlefield in 1806, I have thus identified her as a daughter of Isaac THOMPSON and his unnamed first wife.

Betsy YOUNG, wife of Isaac GATES
Again, while the book does not state in the paragraph about this marriage, that Betsy is the daughter of Silas YOUNG and Hannah CARROLL, it does mention that she was "one of the children who came on the horse with her mother" (pg. 8). Previously on page 7, the arrival of Betsy's mother (Hannah CARROLL, wife of Silas YOUNG) is written up in great detail. Following is a snippet from the book: : "....adventure of Hannah CARROLL, wife of Silas YOUNG, a Qaker (sic), from Pennsylvania, who came a little later; Mrs. YOUNG on horseback with a baby in her arms, and two little children on the horse behind her....."

*Eliazer Hovey
The following information was contributed by Arthur Stafford, a descendent of Eliazer (Elijah) Hovey:

My mother, Florence (Hovey) Stafford was the g-g-granddaughter of Mr. Hovey. His real name was Elijah Hovey. He and his family settled Munson Township in 1816. His house still stands on Mulberry Road, and is plaqued. It was the first frame house erected in Munson, and the Hoveys are listed among the First Families of Ohio by the Ohio Genealogical Society. Elijah Hovey is credited with naming Munson. It was supposed to be Monson, for the family's ancestral home, Monson, MA. Unfortunately, handwriting being what it was in those days, the "o" became "u" and the rest is history. You can find Elijah's ancestry in THE HOVEY BOOK, Describing The English Ancestry and American Descendants of Daniel Hovey of Ipswich, Massachusetts, Lewis R. Hovey, Haverhill, MA, 1913, pp. 208-9. He was b. Oct 13, 1765 in Windham, CT. His wife was Wealthy Utley (1769-1842). They were married about 1789. She was discontented with life on the frontier, and while returning to Connecticut, Elijah died in New York September 18, 1830. Their son, Hiram Hovey (1803-1849) remained in Munson. His biography is on p. 265. It was Hiram who married Abigail Foster (1812-1892). They married in 1827. She survived him by forty-three years, and the Hovey farm, called the Abigail Hovey House, dated 1849, still stands on Sherman Road in Munson, and is also plaqued. Their son, Albert Dwight Hovey (1845-1916) became a prominent citizen of Chardon, OH, where he operated a drug store on the town square (10 Union Block), and the building still stands. He married Mary Foote (1850-1934) in Chardon on May 20, 1880. His entry can be found on p. 342 of the same book. Mary was a direct descendant of Nathaniel Foote of Wethersfield, CT and her ancestry is detailed in NATHANIEL FOOTE of Wethersfield, Connecticut And His Descendants, Abram W. Foote, Marble City Press, Rutland, Vermont, 1907, p. 398. Both Albert and Mary (Foote) Hovey are entombed in the Chardon Mausoleum. Their son, Charles Albert Hovey (1884-1966), also p. 398 of the Hovey book, was my grandfather. He married Laura Thacker (1886-1984) on his birthday, September 7, 1909. They are buried together in Kissimmee, FL.

The Hiram Hovey Family burial plot is in the Fowler's Mills cemetery on Fowler's Mills Road in Munson. Hiram, Abigail and two of their children, Mary and Horace, are buried there. When Elijah Hovey came to Munson he was accompanied by two of his sons, Hiram and Oliver. The Oliver Hovey House also stands on Mulberry Road, a short distance east of Elijah's house. It is also plaqued. Also accompanying Elijah on his journey west was his grandson, Charles Louie Hovey, son of Elijah's son, Orrin. Charles Louie and his family settled Chester Township. So, all the Hoveys of Geauga County came from the same family. If you visit the Chardon Cemetery on Park Street, the Mausoleum also
contains two other Hoveys, Elisha Flint Hovey, another prominent citizen of Chardon, and his brother, Orrin Utley Hovey. Both were brothers of Albert Dwight Hovey. Orrin Utley served in the Civil War, and his crypt is so marked. Northeast of the Mausoleum you will find the large granite headstone of the Foote Family. Here lie the parents and two sisters of Mary (Foote) Hovey, wife of Albert Dwight. Charles Homer Foote (1812-1874) was a merchant and officeholder in Chardon. His wife, Mary (French) Foote (1816-1883) is beside him. If you visit the Chardon Public Library you will be standing on the site of the Albert Dwight Hovey house. When the library was built, the house was moved to Hambden Street (third house on the left, east of the square).
